Finalised UT2004 Submission

'Electroliquid aggregation':
No self-respecting man, whether hunter, doctor or policeman, would shoot a mother with a baby. But still it happens, along with the occasional nurse. The devoted and obedient are just easy targets.

The stake which protrudes through the rectangular prisms symbolizes ‘meat on a stick’ and then through its intersection into the protective box-like structure, enforces cruel violence on innocent beings. Bloodshed is suggested by the unsettling red lighting.

This ramp portrays how the pure are vulnerable to merciless violence; the walls surrounding the ramp - metaphoric of protective mothers and nurses - are unsettled by the stakes that protrude violently through the structure.

This ramp captures the strength of Feminism; to defy the degenerating, patriarchal view present in the quote, it defies its confinement as a small tower in the largely ‘male’ space. Thus the ramp is curved – to celebrate femininity – and spreads out until it dominates the space.

Ramp Designs

'Outside Wall' ramp for Jane Goodall:

(sketch features a perspective view and side view)

The repetitive box-like structures which wrap around the ramp suggest protection and a cosy embrace. However it is undermined by the stakes which protrude violently through the structure, and the red light (reminiscent of blood) as one walks into the laboratory.

'Inside Wall' ramp for Florence Nightingale:

The ramp spreads out to both sides, generating a dominating presence which contradicates the small, contained tower (symbolic of how women's capability are restrained in a male world). Thus it reveals the true potential of females when constraints are broken. This captures a Feminists' struggle against degrading male definitions.

Finalised Lab Development

Upon consulting Brad, i decided to select another pair of buildings to represent Jane Goodall and Florence Nightingale. These were then developed in UT2004.

Jane Goodall: "No self-respecting hunter would shoot a mother with a baby, but this bush-meat trade is no longer made up of self-respecting people."
Goodall's laboratory will be outside the wall. This composition reflects the 2 main themes from her quote - the idea of protection, and how it is undermined by thoughtless violence. Thus while the large box-like shape is metaphorical of a cosy embrace, the stake and rectangular discs resemble 'meat on a stick'. Furthermore they protrude into the side of the box-like shape, acting as an unsettling, violent intrusion.

Red lighting was a powerful tool in communicating my idea of disharmony and the destruction of innocence - the box-like structure (metaphoric of a protective, loving figure) is bleeding from the violent instrusion in its side.

The above screenshot features the rough length and placement of the ramp as it wasn't yet developed.

Florence Nightingale: "No man, not even a doctor, ever gives any other definition of what a nurse should be than this -- 'devoted and obedient.' This definition would do just as well for a porter. It might even do for a horse. It would not do for a policeman."

Nightingale's laboratory is placed inside the wall, within a 'subtracted' box space. It is metaphorical of the feminist struggle against degenerating male restraints; the thin tower reaching for the sky is symbolic of the female, marginalised and isolated within a patriarchal society. Dominating male power and thinking is thus conveyed by the larger, thicker rectangular blocks on the left (top diagram), which are attempting to reach over to the right and push the tower/female further away.

However a woman's capability should not be underestimated as ultimately, it is the tallest block and continues to grow due to the strength of their determination.

Movement through the 'male' building (the larger structures on the opposite side of the small tower) will be disabled, as it enforces the idea of women being isolated and rejected from many opportunities, deemed appropriate only for men.
